Icon-painting school opened at the "Soborna" gallery of the UOC Cathedral

An icon-painting school started its work in the "Soborna" gallery of the Spiritual and Educational Center of the UOC Cathedral, reports the website of the gallery.

The course will be led by the icon painter, Master of Theology Sergius Ilchishin and includes icon painting basics. Teaching canonical icon painting technology will be based on the works by old masters.

"An icon is a holy book about the Orthodox Faith, written in the language of lines and colors. This book reveals the dogmatic, moral and liturgical life of the Holy Church. The decoration of the churches together with the church singing is a kind of theology in colors and sounds, which are inextricably linked with the liturgical text. In the spiritual harmony of Christian culture the icon plays the primary role," emphasizes the site.

The school is named after St. Alipy of the Caves, one of the first and best painters of Kievan Rus and the Caves Monastery. The course is designed for three years and consists of 33 thematic lessons per year. The program provides teaching canonical Byzantine-Russian style of icon painting for 12+ aged children and adults up to 35 years.

Lessons of icon painting will be held in the premises of the gallery "Soborna". The syllabus includes the history and theory of icon painting, workshops in icon painting and hands-on work. Together with the study of the techniques of icon painting, to complete the perception of Eastern Christian church culture themed movies will be viewed on the history of icon painting. It is also planned to hold lectures on Christian theological topics.

Students will be able to master the technique of preparing the board, unshaded drawing on paper, to get basic knowledge of painting in tempera and learn much more.

The icon-painting course is free.
