Statue of Christ vandalised in India after canonisation of Mother Teresa
As reported to Fides by Sajan K. George, head of the "Global Council of Indian Christians" (GCIC), "Mother Teresa's canonisation was a great day of joy in India and the world: the more so today our religious feelings are negatively affected by this vandalism. And if some attribute the incident to a drunk person, the lack of interest shown in particular by law enforcement officers for our religious feelings and the broken body of Our Jesus Christ is very painful", said the president of the GCIC.
Violence on structures or Christian people keeps Christians in India in alarm. Last July some unknown persons tried to set fire to a church belonging to the Protestant Indian community, "Church of South India", in the Indian state of Karnataka.
A month earlier, a Catholic priest in the state of Assam (in the Northeast of the country) was attacked by an unidentified person and was hospitalized with serious injuries caused by machetes. Often such episodes are attributed to Hindu extremist groups that attack religious minorities.
