Metropolitan Georgios of Paphos elected Primate of the Church of Cyprus

On 24 December 2022, the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus elected a new Primate, Metropolitan George of Paphos, reports “Romfea”.
According to the resource “Romfea”, Metropolitan Georgios of Paphos received 11 votes, Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol received 4, while one ballot paper was left blank.
Metropolitan Georgios was born in the village of Athienou in British-occupied Cyprus on May 25, 1949.
In 1967 he graduated from Pancypriot High School and with a scholarship from the IKY he entered the Chemistry Department of the University of Athens, from which he graduated in 1972.
He was then admitted to the Theological School of Athens, from which he graduated in 1980.
He did postgraduate studies in England, in chemistry and theology.
He was ordained a deacon on 23 December 1984 by the Bishop of Salamis, Varnavas, and an Elder on March 17, 1985, by Archbishop Chrysostomos I of Cyprus.
He served as a Professor of Chemistry during the years 1985-1996, while in 1994 he was appointed Secretary of the Holy Synod.
On May 26, 1996, he was ordained titular Bishop of Arsinois, Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of Paphos.
On December 29, 2006, he was elected Metropolitan of Paphos.
He represented the Church of Cyprus in Pan-Orthodox Conferences and in the dialogue with the Roman Catholic Church and the confessions of the Lutherans and Reformers.
In July 2013, as part of the delegation of the Church of Cyprus, Metropolitan Georgios took part in the celebrations of the 1025th anniversary of the baptism of Rus.
On July 23, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow awarded him the order of St. Alexius of Moscow, 2nd degree.
As earlier reported, the Phanar head said that he would not interfere in the election of the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus.
