Heads of OCU and UGCC agree on transition to new church calendar
The head of the UGCC, Sviatoslav Shevchuk, and the head of the OCU, Epifaniy Dumenko.
On 24 December 2022, the head of the OCU, Epifaniy Dumenko, and the head of the UGCC, Sviatoslav Shevchuk, agreed on the transition to a new church calendar, reports the UGCC website.
"The church leaders paid particular attention to the coordination of positions on the reform of the church calendar, which every time is more acute before the Christmas and Easter holidays. After the discussion, it was proposed to create a joint working group, which should comprehensively study this issue. This working group should work out concrete proposals for the Primates and Synods of both Churches in the context of preparations for celebrating the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council held in Nicaea in 325. At this Council, calendar principles of church life were defined," the statement said.
Shevchuk also handed Dumenko a letter outlining the considerations of UGCC hierarchs regarding the church calendar.
As reported, the Phanar head allowed the Volyn Eparchy of the OCU in Volyn to switch to the new style.
