The deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine from the “Opposition platform – For life” faction Ilya Kiva demanded that the head of the OCU Epiphany Dumenko canonize the African American George Floyd who died in the US during the police arrest. On his Facebook page, the MP compared mass protests in America with the events of the Ukrainian Maidan of 2013-2014 and offered to include the deceased in the lists of the Heavenly Hundred.

“In solidarity with the American citizens, sharing their national grief, in light of the tragic death of the black great martyr, as an MP of Ukraine, I propose to declare a week of mourning and rename Stepan Bandera Avenue in Kiev into Floyd Avenue!!! I also turn to Metropolitan Epiphany with the demand to canonize the innocently murdered Floyd and introduce his commemoration day in the church calendar,” wrote Kiva.

The parliamentarian also demanded that the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmygal allocate material assistance to the family of the deceased in the amount of $ 10,000,000.

“I ask you to consider the possibility of including Floyd in the lists of the Heavenly Hundred as a person who began the “Revolution of Dignity” in the United States of America!!! Forever with Floyd in the heart,” Kiva concluded.

On May 25, 2020, the African American George Floyd died during the police detention in Minneapolis.

Floyd's death caused a wave of mass protests across the United States; however, later peaceful demonstrations escalated into clashes with law enforcement agencies and riots. Protesters set fire to the “Presidential Church” in Washington and desecrated St. Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral in New York. To pacify the protests, local authorities imposed curfews and involved the National Guard in many cities in America.

Archbishop Elpidophoros (Lambriniadis), the Head of the Archbishopric of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in America, also took part in one of these protests in Brooklyn.

According to the hierarch of the UOC, Metropolitan Luke (Kovalenko) of Zaporizhia and Melitopol, protests in the United States exposed a lie disguised as the struggle for truth.
