President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law according to which Ukraine will celebrate the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945 on May 8 every year. According to the website of the Verkhovna Rada, on June 12, 2023, the Office of the President returned the signed law to the Parliament.

The initiator of the postponement of the celebration of Victory Day was the head of state – he submitted a bill to the Verkhovna Rada on May 8, 2023, and on May 29б the deputies voted for it.

The explanatory note to the draft stated that "Ukraine as an integral part of the large European family must celebrate the Day of Victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945 together with all of Europe and the entire civilized democratic world, precisely on May 8."

According to Zelenskyy, the adoption of this law "will contribute to debunking the myths and manipulations of the Soviet-Russian propaganda."

Earlier, the UOJ wrote that on May 8, 2023, the President signed a Decree on the annual celebration of Europe Day in Ukraine on May 9.
