On August 29, 2023, the head of the UGCC, Sviatoslav Shevchuk, stated that the Pope does not understand Russia, its history, and its contemporary crimes, as reported by the official website of the Ukrainian Greek Catholics.
In his statement regarding the upcoming Synod of the UGCC, which will take place in Rome from September 3 to 12, Shevchuk noted that 'somehow during the war, it happened that the Pope does not understand Ukraine, and Ukraine does not understand the Pope'.
'We can say the same about Russia. The Pope does not understand Russia, neither its history nor its contemporary crimes. And it is precisely our duty to be the voice of truth of the Ukrainian people even before the Holy Father in Rome,' Shevchuk said.
According to him, 'the truth is that sometimes many people, even religious figures, find it more comfortable to dwell in the lies of Russian propaganda than to face the harsh but Ukrainian truth.'
As earlier reported, according to Irina Farion, the reaction of the head of the UGCC, Sviatoslav Shevchuk, to the words of Pope Francis about Russia is a disgrace.
