The incident was confirmed on social media by Rouen Mayor Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol. According to him, all state resources have been mobilized, and workers and visitors have been evacuated.
At the time of the fire, reconstruction work was being carried out on the cathedral's roof, and the spire of the building caught fire. The causes of the fire are being determined.
The Gothic cathedral in Rouen is a French national heritage monument, built between the 12th and 16th centuries. The iron spire, which is reportedly burning now, was added later.
