On November 10, 2024, special prayer services and processions were held in all the monasteries, sketes, and cells of Mount Athos, seeking an end to the prolonged drought, reports Vima Orthodoxias.
The prayer services and processions were conducted following a decision by the Holy Community of Mount Athos. Special petitions were made to the Lord, the Mother of God, and the saints for the granting of rain.
In the capital of Athos, Karyes, in the Protaton Church, which houses the miracle-working icon of the Mother of God "Axion Estin", a prayer service and procession were held, involving representatives of the Holy Community, the monasteries, cells, and sketes of Athos, as well as pilgrims. The service was led by Elder Simeon, abbot of the Dionysiou Monastery.
The drought has significantly affected Karyes, where the high number of pilgrims has led to a severe water shortage. In the summer, pilgrims reported that water supply in Karyes was shut off at night to conserve resources.
Previously, the Union of Orthodox Journalists reported that Mount Athos has been experiencing a series of seismic tremors for two weeks.
