Pope Francis stated that Donald Trump’s plans for mass deportations of immigrants would be a “disgrace”. He made these remarks during his appearance on a popular Italian talk show, Che Tempo Che Fa, on the eve of Trump’s inauguration, reports AP.

“If true, this will be a disgrace, because it makes the poor wretches who have nothing pay the bill for the problem. This won’t do! This is not the way to solve things. That’s not how things are resolved,” the Pontiff declared.

The publication recalled that during Donald Trump’s first presidential campaign in 2016, Pope Francis called him “not a Christian” for his promise to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

AP noted that Pope Francis, who grew up in Argentina in a family of Italian immigrants, has long prioritized the plight of migrants and urged governments to welcome, protect, and integrate them to the extent of their capabilities. He emphasized that the dignity and rights of migrants take precedence over national security concerns.

As the UOJ previously reported, on the day of Trump’s inauguration, the head of the Roman Catholic Church sent an official message congratulating the American president. In the letter, he expressed his admiration for the ideals of the United States and his hope for the creation of “a more just society, where there is no place for hatred, discrimination, or exclusion.”

Earlier, Pope Francis also issued a decree addressing the responsibility for unauthorized entry into Vatican territory.
