On the evening of May 22, 2025, Archpriest Dmytro Sydor, rector of the Exaltation of the Cross Cathedral of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) in Uzhhorod, was hospitalized. According to the cathedral community’s Telegram channel, the priest is currently in the cardiology department.
“We pray for the health of our priest Dmytro, who is being persecuted for his courageous preaching in defense of the Holy Orthodox Church – the UOC,” the parishioners wrote.
The court hearing in the case against the priest has been postponed until June 19.
As previously reported by the UOJ, Archpriest Dmytro is being charged under Article 161 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violation of citizens’ equality on the basis of race, nationality, or religion) for sermons in which he allegedly made discriminatory remarks about Hungarian Catholics in the Transcarpathian region. During the May 21 court session, Fr. Dmytro’s defense team submitted documents to the court indicating serious violations during the investigation and fabrication of key evidence.
