Paphos Metropolitan Tychikos, deposed from his see by the decision of the Cyprus Synod on May 22, 2025, has filed an appeal to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. This was reported by the UOJ in Greece referring to its sources.
The resource reports that, according to Article 81 of the Charter of the Church of Cyprus, any hierarch sentenced to deprivation of rank or deposition can appeal to the Ecumenical Patriarch. This right is also provided in the Church of Greece.
According to canonical law and the Statute of the Church of Cyprus, the filing of an appeal suspends the execution of synodal decisions of 22.05.25 until the appeal is considered by the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
Thus, the UOJ authors in Greece write, formally Metropolitan Tychikos remains the hierarch of Paphos, and according to the Statute, the Synod cannot proceed with the election of a new metropolitan in Paphos.
This also means that Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus is no longer the locum tenens of the Paphos Metropolis.
Earlier, the UOJ wrote that Greek theologian Anastasios Gotsopoulos analyzed why the deposition of the Metropolitan of Paphos is unlawful.
