Synod of Greece: No theological grounds for disagreement with new passports

The Permanent Holy Synod of the Church of Greece stated that regarding the new Greek passports (the so-called "Personal Number"), no theological objection can be raised.

On June 12-13, 2025, during the meeting of the Permanent Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, the hierarchs discussed Presidential Decree 40/2025, which establishes the "Personal Number" for the gradual replacement of the identity card number, tax number, and social security number, as well as for linking public sector registries.

In this regard, the Synod reported that during people's transactions with the public sector, identification will not be exclusively based on the "Personal Number," but personal registration data (name, surname, birth details, etc.) will continue to be requested;

The Synod's statement also mentions that the "Personal Number" replaces existing numbers (identity card number, tax number, social security number) that individuals already have.

Therefore, regarding the "Personal Number," neither a theological objection nor a claim of unconstitutional restriction of individual freedoms (such as personal data) can be raised due to the replacement of three existing registry numbers with one unified number, according to the Permanent Holy Synod of the Church of Greece.

Earlier, the UOJ wrote that the Church of Greece will open a digital bank.
