Only three hierarchs from “Greek” Churches сome to Phanar for chrism-making
Contrary to the Phanar’s expectations, only three hierarchs from representatives of other Local Churches participated in the divine service with the consecration of myrrh in April 2022 – Metropolitan George of Guinea (Patriarchate of Alexandria), Archbishop Nectarios of Anfidon (representative of the Jerusalem Patriarchate in Istanbul) and Metropolitan George of Paphos (the Church of Cyprus), reports orthodoxianewsagency.gr.
In the Patriarchate of Constantinople, myrrh is made about once every ten years. The last time this happened was in 2012. As a rule, representatives of a number of Local Churches are present at the chrismation in Istanbul, especially those that receive chrism from Constantinople – these are the Churches of Alexandria, Antioch, Jerusalem, Cyprus, Greece, Poland, Albania and the Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia.
According to the Church Statute, the rite of chrismation takes place during Holy Week. The service is led by The Primate of the Church. A number of Local Orthodox Churches – Constantinople, Russian, Georgian, Serbian, Romanian, Bulgarian, as well as the Orthodox Church in America – make myrrh on their own.
Earlier, the UOJ wrote about who has the right to make myrrh and how this right correlates with the autocephalous status of the Church.
