Are the Old Testament prophets still relevant today – and what was their true mission?

The ministry of the Old Testament prophets cannot be reduced to mere prediction of the future. A prophet is, first and foremost, the living conscience of the people – the voice of God speaking through a human being.

His mission is to perceive God’s presence in the present moment – in history, in human destiny, and in the conscience of every person – and to remind people of their calling to live in harmony with God. Sometimes his words sound harsh, for silence is impossible when one sees falsehood, injustice, and apostasy from the divine will.

Although the prophets foretold future events and even worked miracles, their main desire was to live according to God’s commandments and help others remain steadfast on the path of truth.

The books of the prophets teach us to look at history differently: the events of the world do not occur by chance, nor are they determined solely by politics or coincidence. History is guided by the will of God. He is the Lord and Judge of the world before whom nothing is hidden. Through the prophets we hear that God is present in every moment of life, and that His word continues to act even where chaos seems to reign.

A special place in their message belongs to the prophecies of the coming of the Messiah. Their precision and depth are astonishing. Long before the Nativity of Christ, the prophets foretold not only that the Savior would come, but also the specific circumstances: where He would be born, from which lineage, through what sufferings He would pass, and how He would bring salvation to humankind.

These revelations give a sense of the inner unity of all Scripture: the Old Testament anticipates the New, and the New reveals the meaning of the Old. Christ Himself confirmed this, saying to His disciples: “Everything written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled” (Luke 24:44).

With the coming of Christ, the prophetic voice did not fall silent – it continues to sound in the Church, which bears witness to the same divine truth.

The prophetic books remain living words for every generation: they teach us to discern God’s providence behind outward events, to distinguish good from evil, to remain faithful to truth, and to fearlessly remind the world of God’s justice and the unchanging nature of His promises.
