In the Roman Catholic Church, a Doctrinal Explanation Una caro ("One Flesh") has been published, dedicated to the unity and monogamy of Christian marriage. The document was prepared by the Department of Doctrine under the leadership of Cardinal Victor Fernandez and approved by Pope Leo XIV on November 21, writes vaticannews.

Marriage is defined as “an indissoluble unity” by the doctrinal Note of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF), calling it an “exclusive union and mutual belonging.”

The authors of the document draw attention to the challenges of modernity, including the spread of non-monogamous forms of relationships and the influence of technologies that encourage a person to consider themselves a being "without limits."

The text provides biblical and patristic foundations for monogamy, as well as the traditions of the Eastern and Western Churches in understanding marriage. It is noted that the unity of spouses as "one flesh" is maintained throughout life, even when the physical aspects of the relationship change.

The document reminds that true marital love implies freedom, mutual respect, and responsibility, and human love in marriage is always directed to its highest source – God.

As reported by the UOJ, the Pope held an audience for a same-sex couple in the Vatican.
