The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and other billionaires have backed a major TED initiative under which more than $1 billion will be directed to projects promoting abortion in countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. A key recipient of the funding will be Ipas, an organization known for campaigning to legalize abortion and change legislation in countries with strong pro-life positions, as reported by LifeSiteNews.
According to the outlet, the program, known as the Audacious Project and created by TED with the support of major donors, has announced the distribution of $1.03 billion for new initiatives. Formally, the grants are presented as projects focused on “medical breakthroughs” and “saving the planet.” However, among the recipients are structures directly involved in expanding access to abortion.
In particular, Ipas has for many years promoted abortion worldwide and distributed portable vacuum devices used to perform abortions. According to sources, a single unit can be used for dozens of procedures.
The organization’s goal is to reduce so-called unsafe abortions by 30% in ten countries by 2040, including Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, and Zambia, as well as Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Mexico. According to Ipas representatives, the program will require at least $350 million.
At the same time, part of the funding is expected to be used to lobby for the legalization of abortion in countries where laws protecting life remain in force, as well as to promote abortion drugs through pharmacies and so-called self-managed care, in which a woman receives the pills without medical supervision.
In the view of the article’s authors, the new initiative is effectively intended to offset cuts in USAID funding and preserve the global network of organizations promoting abortion. These programs will now be financed not by government structures, but by private foundations and billionaires.
As the UOJ reported, the European Commission has officially authorized the use of EU social funds to finance abortions.
