On April 30, in the French city of Vazerac, an event took place in a Catholic church that the organizers called an “electro-mass” – however, it was actually a DJ performance with electronic music. This was reported by Tribune Chrétienne.
At the Saint-Julien Church, the DJ placed his console directly on the altar – in the sanctuary of the church, where the Eucharist is celebrated. During the performance, electronic music played, and the church space was used as a venue for concerts and dancing.
The organizers presented the event as charitable: admission was free, and part of the donations was planned to be directed to the Catholic organization Secours Catholique. At the same time, they declared the need for “appropriate behavior” in the church.
Using the altar as a stage for the DJ caused controversy, since the altar is the central sacred place. It is still unknown whether the event was coordinated with diocesan authorities.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that in France, 7th-century church was planned to be converted into brewery and restaurant.
