Vandals behead statue of the Mother of God and Child in France

On May 4, 2026, near the French city of Lyon, unknown individuals desecrated a statue of the Most Holy Theotokos and Child, beheading both figures, Tribune Chrétienne reports.

According to preliminary information, the shrine was damaged with a heavy tool. The statue, installed many decades ago, was well known to local residents and was regarded not only as part of the area’s historical heritage, but also as a Christian symbol tied to the spiritual life of the community.

Local authorities condemned the incident, calling the act of vandalism unacceptable. Residents also expressed pain and outrage, stressing that the attack on the image of the Mother of God was a heavy blow to the entire community. Many noted that such actions are directed not only against a monument, but also against the Christian faith and its traditions.

Following the incident, police launched an investigation. Many residents have already said they are ready to take part in restoring the desecrated shrine, while calls to preserve the region’s Christian heritage have appeared on social media.

In France, such cases are increasingly raising concern among Christians, who speak of a rise in attacks on churches, crosses, and religious monuments. Believers emphasize that acts of desecration against shrines wound not only people’s religious feelings, but also strike at the country’s cultural and spiritual memory.

Earlier, the UOJ wrote that vandals had desecrated a statue of the Mother of God in Lviv region.
