The Tbilisi Development Fund began the restoration project of the Sioni Cathedral on May 27, 2026. City Mayor Kakha Kaladze announced this at a municipal government meeting, reports local "First Channel".
The capital authorities consider both the church itself and its bell tower to be cultural heritage monuments. Kaladze decribed the presence of such historical sites a great asset for gthe city and recalled the implementation of a whole series of similar projects recently.
Fund specialists discovered serious damage to the roof of the cathedral and bell tower. Precipitation penetrates inside the building and damages the walls. Constant moisture creates a direct threat to the preservation of unique frescoes inside the church. Restorers will conduct restoration work precisely in this part of the church complex.
The city administration has already completed tender procedures and signed a contract with the winning company. The city mayor expects the completion of all restoration stages by the end of October.
As the UOJ reported, Georgia is preparing for celebrations of the 1700th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity. This emphasizes that for the church and cultural life of the country, issues of church preservation are connected with public church events and public memory.
