In the USA, amid the growth of Orthodox communities, they have faced a shortage of priests
A study shows an increase in the number of believers in Orthodox communities in the USA while simultaneously experiencing a shortage of clergy. This is reported by Orthodox Studies.
According to published data, in recent years the Orthodox Church in America has recorded an increase in the number of parishioners and new missions. At the same time, the number of clergy is growing significantly slower. This leads to one priest serving several parishes simultaneously, combining liturgical, administrative and pastoral duties.
The study authors note that the personnel shortage is related to the limited number of seminary candidates, financial difficulties of parishes, and high workload on already active priests. In some regions, this leads to reduced frequency of divine services and increased distances that believers are forced to travel to participate in the liturgy.
The publication also indicates that the growth of interest in Orthodoxy in the USA is partially related to conversions from other denominations, as well as active missionary activity. However, without increasing the number of clergy, this growth may face organizational limitations.
Researchers believe that solving the problem requires a comprehensive approach: expanding priest training programs, financial support for parishes, and more active involvement of laypeople in church life.
As reported by the Union of Orthodox Journalists, ten Americans accepted Orthodoxy in Oregon state on the feast of Trinity.
