UN calls for ban on surrogacy
On July 2, it became known that a group of states at the UN presented a political declaration calling for an international moratorium on surrogacy, reports The European Conservative.
The document was initiated by Italy and Chile and presented on June 22 on the sidelines of the 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council. The event was organized by Italy, Chile, Cameroon and the Holy See, with ADF International serving as moderator.
The declaration is not legally binding and does not obligate states to change their legislation. However, its supporters consider the document a first step toward creating an international agreement aimed at abolishing surrogacy.
The text of the declaration states that surrogacy is associated with serious risks for women and children. These include harm to health, coercion, loss of autonomy, psychological consequences, legal uncertainty, human trafficking and exploitation.
Supporters of the moratorium argue that national bans are no longer sufficient, as surrogacy has become a cross-border market. According to them, countries with restrictive legislation effectively shift demand to jurisdictions where women are more vulnerable and legal protections are weaker.
The Union of Orthodox Journalists previously reported that the UN enshrined the concept of gender separately from biological sex.
