Fire erupts at 14th-century Gothic basilica in Bordeaux

A fire broke out near the walls of the historic Basilica of Saint-Michel in Bordeaux after a blaze broke out in a nearby migrant camp, according to Vidmax.

The incident occurred around July 4, 2026, when flames engulfed tents used by homeless migrants that had been erected directly beside the historic structure. Eyewitness footage showed thick black smoke rising from the base of the 14th-century church, which is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Local police officers quickly contained the fire using portable extinguishers before firefighters arrived. The basilica itself did not suffer significant damage, and no injuries were reported. Authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of the fire in the migrant settlement.

The incident has sparked criticism from conservative circles in France, which accuse the government of failing to protect Christian heritage sites. Critics argue that uncontrolled migration and the authorities’ reluctance to dismantle illegal camps are placing irreplaceable monuments of European history at risk.

“Import the third world, and you get third-world problems, even at the doorstep of your most sacred historic sites,” one social media commentator posted alongside the video.

As the UOJ reported, two historic Catholic churches in France were destroyed by fire on the same day.
