An archival letter from UGCC Metropolitan Andriy Sheptytsky to Adolf Hitler, in which he predicted a complete German victory in the war, has resurfaced online. In the document, dated March 3, 1942, Sheptytsky relayed what he described as a “divine prophecy” that would come true if the Führer cooperated with the Vatican.
Sheptytsky sent the letter from Lviv, addressing Hitler as “Your Excellency.” He wrote that he knew a female prophet who had “admired the Führer for many years and always prayed for him.”
According to the letter, God had allegedly revealed to the woman that Hitler would be “raised to the summit of earthly greatness” if he helped Christianity prevail in full accord with the pope. Sheptytsky stressed that he was glad to fulfill his “duty to Your Excellency” by conveying the mystical message.
At the end of the letter, the UGCC metropolitan described himself as Adolf Hitler’s “devoted servant” and expressed his readiness to provide further details.
As the UOJ reported, representatives of a Kyiv synagogue claimed that Sheptytsky hated Nazism.
