Monasteries on Mount Athos have introduced drone-based monitoring systems to help combat forest fires. The use of the technology has accelerated response time frames in emergency situations, the UOJ’s Greek edition reports.

Ahead of the summer season, fire prevention measures on Mount Athos were strengthened due to abnormally high temperatures and dense vegetation. Fire service commander Vasileios Psaltidis said preparations began in the spring with inspections of forest roads and water supply systems. Each monastery now independently patrols and maintains its own territory.

Vatopedi Monastery has established round-the-clock forest surveillance using a privately operated drone. A drone readiness base has also been set up near the Skete of St. Demetrius. Hilandar Monastery plans to install a video camera and three smoke detectors. Since last year, Vatopedi has also maintained a 23-member volunteer firefighting team, which has already completed the necessary training.

From May 1 through October 31, open fires are prohibited on Mount Athos. The relevant announcement is made in five languages for all pilgrims arriving on the peninsula by sea. In addition to fighting fires, rescuers on Mount Athos assist visitors climbing to the mountain’s summit.

As the UOJ reported, Greece allocated €5.3 million for the restoration of monasteries on Mount Athos.
