Orthodox chapel miraculously survives wildfire in Greece

On August 3, 2026, it became known that an Orthodox chapel in the Triopetra area of the Greek island of Crete had remained unharmed after a major wildfire, UOJ in Greece reported.

The fire swept across large areas of the Agios Vasileios municipality in the Rethymno region. The flames destroyed vegetation, reduced vast stretches of land to ashes, and caused serious damage to the environment and local residents’ property.

Despite the charred landscape surrounding it, the small chapel was left untouched. The church still stands amid the blackened earth, sharply contrasting with the devastation left by the blaze.

For local residents, the surviving shrine has become a symbol of hope at a difficult time. Some attribute what happened to an extraordinary coincidence, while others describe the chapel’s survival as a small miracle.

Photographs of the church standing amid the ashes have become some of the most striking images of the wildfire in southern Rethymno, capturing the contrast between widespread destruction and the sanctuary that remained intact.

As previously reported by the UOJ, a modern clinic will be built on Mount Athos to serve monks and pilgrims.
