Police officers in the West Midlands region of Great Britain were recommended to observe the fast during the month of Ramadan regardless of their religious affiliation. This was reported on August 1 by the newspaper The Telegraph.
The initiative is being implemented with the support of the National Association of Muslim Police of Great Britain. Its stated aim is to help staff better understand the significance of Ramadan for their Muslim colleagues and to promote an inclusive culture within law enforcement agencies.
The guidelines note that Muslim police officers are given flexible working schedules during Ramadan so that they can spend more time with their families. It is also claimed that each year more and more non-Muslim staff voluntarily join the fast as a sign of solidarity.
A spokesperson for West Midlands Police stated that participation in the initiative remains voluntary. According to the spokesperson, for a region home to approximately 570,000 Muslims, it is important that police officers understand the significance of Ramadan for the local community.
As the publication notes, a similar approach is being proposed for other public institutions in Great Britain.
