The remains of Yevhen Konovalets, founder of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), will be brought to the UGCC cathedral in Kyiv for a farewell ceremony, the Office of the President of Ukraine reports.
The remains of the nationalist movement leader, exhumed at a cemetery in Rotterdam, will be transported to Ukraine for subsequent reburial. Colonel Konovalets had previously been buried at Crooswijk Cemetery in Rotterdam.
The exhumation was organized on the instructions of Volodymyr Zelensky by Kyrylo Budanov and the Presidential Office team, Andrii Sybiha and the Foreign Ministry team, as well as Oleksandr Alferov and the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory team. Following the farewell ceremony at the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ of the UGCC, Konovalets’ remains will be reburied at the National Military Memorial Cemetery.
Yevhen Konovalets was born in 1891 and served in the Austrian army. In the 1910s, he commanded the Sich Riflemen Corps and attained the rank of colonel in the army of the Ukrainian People’s Republic. In 1929, he co-founded the OUN and became its leader. After Konovalets was killed in a terrorist attack in Rotterdam in 1938, the OUN was headed by his close associate Andrii Melnyk.
As the UOJ previously reported, the remains of OUN-M leader Andrii Melnyk were brought to the UGCC cathedral in Kyiv.
