On August 10, 2026, one of the towers of the Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary in Manizales, Colombia, collapsed during a magnitude 7.4 earthquake, El Espectador reports.
The tremors damaged the church building, leaving cracks in its structure, while the right-side tower collapsed toward the central nave. The cross mounted on the cathedral was also displaced, and debris fell around the building.
Access to the cathedral was restricted after the earthquake. Specialists are carrying out a technical inspection to determine the extent of the damage and whether it is safe to enter the building. No injuries inside the cathedral itself have been reported.
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary is one of Manizales’ landmarks and has held cultural heritage status since 1984. Other buildings in the city were also damaged.
The earthquake also caused destruction in other parts of Colombia, including Cali and Pereira. Authorities continue to assess the impact of the disaster and inspect damaged structures.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that two historic Catholic churches in France burned down in a single day.
