Vandalism at RCC cathedral in German Soest: altar and statue defaced

In the Roman Catholic St. Patrokli Cathedral in Soest (North Rhine-Westphalia), Germany, a statue, a side altar, and adjacent masonry were defaced with black paint on August 10, 2026, reports the UOJ in Germany.

The preliminary damage estimate is approximately 15,000 euros. The inscriptions contained no slogans or other indicators that would point to a motive for the crime, so police have so far been unable to determine who is behind the vandalism.

Matthias Kopp, the press spokesman for the German Bishops' Conference, warned as early as 2025 of increasing uninhibited behavior. According to him, the clearance rate for cases of vandalism against churches is in the low single digits. At the same time, Kopp criticized the fact that such acts are often only recorded as property damage in statistics, without taking into account their religious context.

The St. Patrokli Cathedral, with a core dating back over 1000 years, is one of the most important historical churches in Soest. Parts of the current structure date from the Middle Ages. The church was severely damaged during the Second World War and subsequently rebuilt over several years.

Cases of vandalism against church buildings in Germany are recorded on a regular basis, and according to Church representatives, only a small fraction of such crimes ever reach the courts.

As the UOJ reported, in July incidents of church vandalism across Europe doubled.
