Bishop Sylvester of Jinja and Eastern Uganda baptized forty-six catechumens at the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in the city of Jinja. The clergy received the new believers into the fold of the Orthodox Church during the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, which in the Alexandrian Church is celebrated according to the new calendar on August 15, reports Orthodoxia Post.
On August 15, 2026, hundreds of faithful came to the cathedral of the city of Jinja for the festal divine service. On that day, forty-six adults and children from surrounding communities received holy baptism. During his homily, Bishop Sylvester called upon the flock to give thanks to God in all circumstances and trials of life.
The archpastor described the Mother of God as a perfect example of humility, obedience, and faithfulness to the will of the Lord. The bishop cited the words of St. Paisios the Athonite regarding the constant intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos over mankind.
His Grace Sylvester wished the newly baptized Christians spiritual strength, the mercy of the Lord, and perseverance in their new life. The hierarch called upon the established members of the Church to become a worthy example and spiritual companions for the new parishioners. At the conclusion of the feast, Bishop Sylvester expressed deep gratitude to Metropolitan Jerome of Larissa and Tyrnavos and to Greek benefactors for their missionary support of the diocese.
As the UOJ reported, Patriarch Shio became the godfather of more than 600 children.
