‘Silent disco’ held at Canterbury Cathedral in England

A “silent disco” featuring music from the 1980s was held at Canterbury Cathedral of the Church of England on August 15, 2026, Christian Today reports.
The event was organized by the company Silent Discos in Incredible Places and consisted of two sessions lasting two and a half hours each. A similar event was held there in 2024 and prompted a petition against it that gathered more than 2,000 signatures.
National Catholic Register senior Vatican correspondent Edward Pentin drew attention to the latest event, noting that Canterbury Cathedral is a place of particular holiness for both Protestants and Catholics. Pentin also stressed that the disco took place on the Feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos.
Tim Dieppe, head of Christian Concern, wrote on X: “The church no longer believes in the attracting power of the gospel, and resorts to secular music instead.” Christian commentator Adrian Hilton described what happened as a “desecration of a sacred space.”
Silent Discos in Incredible Places is currently advertising similar events in Beverley Minster, Sheffield Cathedral, Hereford Cathedral, Chester Cathedral, Ely Cathedral, Salisbury Cathedral, St Albans Cathedral and Truro Cathedral.
As the UOJ reported, Canterbury Cathedral had previously allowed visitors to bring dogs inside in an effort to attract tourists.
