The murder at the Sviatohirsk Lavra is becoming a central topic of discussion among Local Churches. Condolences on this matter were expressed by Metropolitan Isaac of Germany and Central Europe of the Antiochian Orthodox Church, whose statement is cited by the UOJ in Germany.
"With deep sorrow we learned about the murder of Monk Varsonofiy at the Sviatohirsk Lavra and of the serious wounding of two other brethren," the hierarch's statement reads. He noted that he is praying for the repose of the slain monk and the swift recovery of the wounded, and asked Christ to strengthen the brethren of the Lavra during this ordeal.
"At the same time, we ask that the truth about this terrible crime come to light and that justice prevail," the metropolitan said.
He emphasized that Orthodox Christians “cannot remain indifferent in the face of violence and suffering, but are called to pray for peace, mercy, and the overcoming of hatred.”
"Eternal memory to Monk Varsonofiy. May the Lord grant healing to the wounded and keep His people in peace," the hierarch wrote in conclusion of his address.
As the UOJ reported, the attack on the Sviatogorsk Lavra brethren occurred on August 23, 2026, at around 11:00 a.m. near the St. Nicholas Church in the upper part of the monastery. Several monastics sustained stab wounds: Monk Varsonofiy was killed, Monk Hryhoriy (lung wound) and novice Andriy were hospitalized in serious condition at one of the hospitals in Kharkiv. Later, information emerged that the murdered monk had also sustained gunshot wounds.
