Catholic Archbishop of Dijon Antoine Hérouar presided over the funeral of Freemason François Patriat in France in violation of church canons, reports Life Site News.

The funeral service was held on August 25 at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Semur-en-Auxois. The deceased politician was among the closest associates of French President Emmanuel Macron and openly declared his membership in a Masonic lodge. President Macron personally attended the church, delivering a speech.

Catholic doctrine prohibits the faithful from joining Masonic organizations. In the declaration of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith dated November 26, 1983, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger confirmed the incompatibility of Masonic principles with the teaching of the Church. According to this document, Freemasons are in a state of grave sin and forfeit the right to participate in the sacraments.

Previously in Rome, a cardinal had forbidden the funeral service for Freemason Bruno Battisti D'Amario. The bishop applied the norm of canon law that denies ecclesiastical burial to manifest members of societies hostile to the Church who show no signs of repentance before death.

As the UOJ reported, a US college plans to buy a Masonic temple to convert it into a Catholic shrine.
