Albanian theologian calls Sviatohirsk Lavra murder a wound to entire Church

Albanian theologian Dr. Themistoklis Bamboulas described the brutal murder of Monk Varsonofiy at the Dormition Sviatohirsk Lavra as a deep wound to the entire Body of Christ and called for an investigation into the crime committed on the monastery grounds. UOJ in Albania reports.

“The brutal murder of Monk Varsonofiy at the Dormition Sviatohirsk Lavra has deeply shaken all of us as Orthodox Christians,” the doctor of theology said. “The Church is not a community of isolated individuals, but the Body of Christ. Therefore, as the Apostle Paul teaches us, ‘if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it.’ The pain of the Lavra brethren is our pain as well; the monk’s blood has become a wound on the body of the entire Church.”

The Albanian theologian also pointed to the deep wounds that the military conflict has inflicted on the entire Orthodox world. He said divisions and mutual distrust among Orthodox Christians are worsening the situation day by day. The theologian described armed confrontation between peoples who share the same faith as a spiritual defeat for all Christians.

“Monk Varsonofiy’s final words – ‘Glory to the Lord Jesus Christ! I am a monk’ – were a confession of faith in the face of death. For every Christian, his response is a testimony bearing the character of martyrdom. He met violence not by renouncing his identity, but by proclaiming Christ and affirming his monastic calling.”

The theologian called on law enforcement agencies to conduct an honest and transparent investigation into the crime in order to identify and punish those responsible. In his view, the testimony of one of the novices contains deeply troubling signs of nationalist extremism. He warned society against the spread of radical nationalism and hate speech directed against the canonical Church.

“Extreme nationalism, whatever flag it may march under, knows neither reason, measure, nor limits. When the nation, the state, or an ideology is placed above the value of the human person and above God’s truth, love of one’s homeland turns into idolatry. Extremism feeds hatred and brings the same tragic consequences wherever it takes root.”

According to Themistoklis Bamboulas, the Church’s response to such atrocities should be fervent prayer, a search for the truth, and tireless work for peace. He wished the injured brethren a speedy recovery and the monastic community spiritual fortitude.

As the UOJ reported, a German theologian condemned the murder of the Sviatohirsk Lavra monk.
