Polish president and prime minister condemn killing of Catholic priest

Poland’s top leaders commented on the attack on an abbey in Jarosław and the killing of a Catholic priest, calling for the detained suspect to face the full force of the law and for an uncompromising defense of public order.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki said the tragedy demanded an immediate and decisive response from all state institutions.

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of a priest who fell victim to a brutal attack at the abbey in Jarosław,” Nawrocki wrote. “I extend my condolences to his loved ones and the entire community. I wish those injured in the attack a speedy recovery.”

He also emphasized that foreigners residing in Poland must respect the country’s laws and rules without exception.

“In the face of such acts, the state must be strong, act swiftly and relentlessly, while upholding the law,” Nawrocki stated. “Everyone in our country must respect the rules and values of our community. Today’s attack has shocked us all and demands a firm response from the state. I expect the authorities to establish all the circumstances of this tragedy swiftly and thoroughly. The state’s duty is to ensure the safety of its citizens.”

For his part, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that the attacker had been detained and said he would face severe punishment.

“The killer from Jarosław is in the custody of the Polish police. Investigative procedures are underway. The perpetrator is a Ukrainian citizen. He will face the full force of Polish law. I share the grief of the loved ones of the victims of this brutal attack.”

Earlier, the UOJ reported that a Ukrainian man had attacked a Catholic monastery in Poland with a knife.
