The LGBT+ Military association thanked Volodymyr Zelensky for including LGBT people among groups at heightened risk of human rights violations in Ukraine’s new National Human Rights Strategy. The organization expressed its appreciation in a post on Facebook.

“We welcome the attention being given to protecting our community,” the post reads.

At the same time, the association argued that recognizing such protections in policy documents alone is not enough and that concrete measures are needed. One such measure, activists say, is the adoption of a civil partnership law that would allow same-sex couples to legally formalize their relationships.

“LGBT+ service members are defending Ukraine right now. They and their loved ones need legal protection for their families right now, too,” the organization stated.

In closing, LGBT+ Military called on the Verkhovna Rada to “move from intentions to action” and vote in favor of the civil partnership bill.

Previously, Volodymyr Zelensky expressed support for the rights of Ukraine’s LGBT community. During a conversation with Oleksandr Demenko, head of the Ukrainian LGBT Military for Equal Rights organization, Zelensky described opposition to LGBT ideology as “prejudices of people from the 15th century.”

As the UOJ previously reported, Zelensky approved a national strategy aimed at protecting LGBT rights.
