Professor of the Kyiv Theological Academy and Seminary Serhiy Bortnyk, who was detained by TRC officers on October 15, has been mobilized. He reported this in the comments under a post by religious studies scholar Nikolai Mitrokhin from Germany on Facebook.
According to Bortnyk, on October 16 he was transferred to a military collection point. He wrote that he holds the rank of reserve lieutenant and has diabetes, so, as he supposes, he should not be sent to the front line itself. The professor added that so far everything is not bad. He was detained, he said, by chance: he was driving along the street. Bortnyk also noted that on several occasions he had already not been allowed to leave for events in Europe.
In his post, Nikolai Mitrokhin called Bortnyk an acquaintance and colleague, and one of very few people in Ukraine with a real Western (German) higher theological education. According to him, Bortnyk returned to the country although he could have stayed in Germany. Mitrokhin also wrote that during the war Ukraine repeatedly allowed Bortnyk to travel to EU countries for conferences.
The author of the post suggested that the detention may be linked to intensified pressure on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
As the UOJ reported, Darnytskyi TRC officers stopped KDA professor Serhiy Bortnyk in Kyiv.
