On October 17, 2026, during a sermon in Riga, Sviatoslav Shevchuk called on all Ukrainians who had moved to Latvia to become members of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), regardless of which Church they had previously belonged to or what language they spoke, according to the official UGCC website.
Shevchuk emphasized the special importance of the Greek Catholic Church for Ukrainian emigrants, stressing that his Church is open to all Ukrainians.
"We do not ask which Church anyone belonged to in Ukraine, nor do we ask what language they spoke... And so, you see, today we are building one big Ukrainian Christian family here," the UGCC head said.
As the UOJ reported, Shevchuk urged the Ukrainian authorities to take action against UOC communities abroad.
