Metropolitan Longin (Zhar) of Bancheny, a hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, thanked residents of Moldova for saving a Ukrainian man. His message was published on the Bancheny Monastery's Facebook page.
"We thank our brothers in Moldova for helping save our Ukrainian brother!" Metropolitan Longin said. "May God bless you, and may you always stand by our side!" The hierarch also mentioned that a similar tragedy had previously claimed the lives of his own children.
Earlier, a video circulated online showing what eyewitnesses described as Ukrainian border guards attempting to prevent a man from swimming across the Dniester River to the Moldovan shore. According to witnesses, the guards struck him on the head with an oar and also attempted to injure him with the propeller of a motorboat.
Local residents intervened on the man's behalf, after which Moldovan border police detained two Ukrainian servicemen for illegally crossing the state border. The man was hospitalized with a concussion.
As the UOJ previously reported, Metropolitan Longin spoke about the abuse his son had suffered at the hands of TRC personnel.
