American AI company Anthropic, the developer of the Claude chatbot, has warned that artificial intelligence could pose catastrophic and existential risks to humanity, according to documents prepared ahead of its planned stock market debut, the BBC reports.
In its filing for an initial public offering (IPO) on the Nasdaq stock exchange, the company warned that advanced AI systems could pose a deadly threat to humans without strict controls, adequate safety measures, and effective oversight.
The main dangers include the potential misuse of AI technology, its deployment in autonomous weapons, and the development of systems with excessive independence, allowing them to operate beyond human control.
The warnings were echoed by company specialists, independent researchers, and regulators. Experts and former industry employees have acknowledged that the development of increasingly powerful AI systems is outpacing efforts to establish safeguards capable of protecting society from harmful actions by autonomous AI agents.
As the UOJ previously reported, ChatGPT had allegedly pushed a U.S. woman to committing a suicide “to fulfill a divine prophecy.”
