What does the Orthodox Church think about Halloween?
Metropolitan Anthony (Pakanich), Chancellor of the UOC, reflects on why Halloween is a false holiday and the spiritual dangers it poses.
A person is known by their deeds, and a holiday by its spirit. If a holiday brings joy and peace, and the traditions associated with it fill people's hearts with kindness and warmth, that is a sure sign that it is good and worthwhile. Otherwise, it is nothing more than a colorful spectacle. Such a masquerade can hardly be called a genuine holiday – it is a false celebration.
This is precisely the case with Halloween, which has found its way into our lives. It is a celebration with a questionable history and sinister characters, devoid of meaning or genuine joy, that promotes evil spirits. Its central themes are demons, death, the occult, and monsters. Paganism in its purest form.
Yet people keep trying, unsuccessfully, to find some “higher” meaning in Halloween, even attributing vaguely Christian elements to it. In reality, many have simply fallen for the marketing schemes of businesses that have made Halloween merchandise fashionable and profit from selling it.
The central purpose of every Christian feast is to proclaim Christ. If that message of salvation is absent, the celebration has nothing to do with Christian tradition.
We must be extremely cautious about such false holidays. Playing around with evil spirits can lead to nothing good. It is profoundly dangerous to one's spiritual life, as is participation in pagan festivities of any kind, including Ivan Kupala celebrations and similar events.
Spiritual decline may go unnoticed at first. After all, what harm could a little distraction do?
But even a slight detour from the main road can have disastrous consequences. We may lose sight of what matters most and stray from the right path. What follows is wandering in darkness – a wandering that can last a lifetime, with no end in sight.
The forces of darkness do not easily release those they have ensnared. They use every possible means to keep their hold on a person.
That is why it is so important to remain faithful to the Truth, even in seemingly insignificant matters, and never abandon the right path under any circumstances.
