Albanian Primate speaks on Christian unity at Assisi forum
Archbishop John urged Christians to stop seeking others' guilt and begin the path to unity with their own repentance, speaking at the Assisi forum.
The Primate of the Albanian Orthodox Church, Archbishop john of Tirana, Durrës and All Albania, delivered a report on Christian unity at the forum "Christian Unity: An Open Question" as part of the International Peace Meeting in the Italian city of Assisi, reports the UOJ in Albania.
In his speech, Archbishop John drew particular attention to the fact that the path to restoring unity begins with deep inner reflection. "Repentance has direct significance for movement toward unity, since it first of all calls us to examine our own actions... Such humility allows us to listen to another without assuming in advance that all the blame lies with the other person."
The head of the Albanian Church stressed that dialogue requires honesty and fidelity to theological truth. "Love for those with whom we are in dialogue does not require us to conceal real disagreement or to agree with falsehood and injustice. Faithfulness to God and meekness toward others are inseparable requirements of Christian witness."
The Albanian Primate also pointed to the need for practical service. "Theological dialogue must be accompanied by practical cooperation in helping people. Care for victims of violence and defense of human dignity are a concrete manifestation of love."
The forum is timed to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the initiative begun by Pope John Paul II in 1986 and is being held from October 25 to 27, 2026. Religious leaders from around the world, high-ranking political and cultural figures, and representatives of civil society from 53 countries are taking part in this international meeting.
Earlier, the UOJ wrote that the Primate of the Albanian Church called for overcoming nationalism in Orthodoxy.
