Metropolitan Gabriel of Lovech is in an induced coma due to a sharp deterioration in his health.
Metropolitan Gabriel of Lovech has been hospitalized at the Military Medical Academy in Sofia due to critical complications and severe pancreatic problems, reports the UOJ in Bulgaria.
The condition of the hierarch of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church has sharply deteriorated. His Eminence is in an induced coma, on a ventilator and life-support systems, and doctors are fighting for his life.
Metropolitan Gabriel is one of the oldest and best-known hierarchs of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. He enjoys wide authority thanks to his spiritual, educational and charitable work, having made a significant contribution to the modern church history of Bulgaria.
Among his most significant initiatives was the construction of the Cathedral of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the center of Lovech; at the start of its construction, the bishop sold his personal property.
Metropolitan Gabriel has also devoted decades to spiritual education, founding in Lovech the first Orthodox school for children, whose aim was to raise teenagers in Christian values.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that in New York a car hit a hierarch of the Bulgarian Church.
