Ukraine birth rate falls nearly 40% in 4 years of war, Justice Ministry says
In 2025, 168,778 births were registered in the country versus 273,772 in 2021, and in the first half of 2026 the decline reached about 45%.
The demographic situation in Ukraine continues to deteriorate: the birth rate has dropped by almost 40% since the start of the full-scale invasion, reports the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine to LIGA.net in response to the outlet's request.
According to the government, 168,778 births were registered in Ukraine in 2025. This is 38.4%, or almost 105,000, fewer than in 2021, when 273,772 births were registered.
The decline began in 2022 and continued in the following years: 206,032 newborns in 2022, 187,387 in 2023, 176,679 in 2024 and 168,778 in 2025.
In the first six months of 2026, 73,292 births were registered in Ukraine. This is approximately 45% fewer than in the same period of 2021, before the invasion. It is expected that by the end of 2026 the number of newborns will be even lower than in 2025.
As the UOJ reported, in Ukraine the death rate is four times higher than the birth rate.
