In Kerkyra there was held Cross procession with relics of Saint Spyridon of Tremithon (VIDEO)
In Corfu Island there was held a nationwide Cross Procession with relics of St. Spyridon of Tremithon. It was attended by a large number of people – not only Corfu residents but also pilgrims from other areas of Greece and other countries. It is reported by Pravosalviye.Ru.
The faithful went across an ancient part of Kerkyra city. The Saint’s relics were positioned vertically in a special crystal reliquary. The procession was led by the island’s clergy, accompanied by plenty of philharmonic orchestras, including the famous “Saint Spyridon” one.
During the procession along Kerkyra streets there could be heard continual festive church chimes in all churches of the island. Under the famous tradition the residents covered the road with laurel leaves and hanged carpets on their balconies.
It will be reminded in 1716 the island was besieged and blocked by the numerous Turkish army. A 40-day confrontation depleted the power of all local residents. Having a hope for the divine protection, helpless residents gathered in the church of St. Spyridon and tearfully prayed to the Saint. Suddenly on 10 August there came on a terrible thunderstorm with the violent sea storm. Preparing for the crucial fight, the residents learnt about a great miracle that had happened at night. The eye-witnesses told how Saint Spyridon with the innumerable host of angels drove away the Turkish army from his island.
