Media: Holy Kinot of Mt. Athos does not consider “Ukrainian issue”

St. Panteleimon’s Monastery on Mt. Athos

The session of the Holy Kinot of Mt. Athos, held on February 11, 2019, brought no collegial decisions regarding its attitude to the newly created OCU, reports "Tsargrad", citing its own sources.

According to the publication, at yesterday’s Kinot session there was indeed a proposal to discuss the “Ukrainian issue”, but representatives of all the monasteries of Athos came to the conclusion that the discussion of this topic should be postponed. After that, the question of the OCU was closed and not returned to anymore.

Also, the sources of "Tsargrad" deny that the Holy Kinot made any statements on the Athonites’ support for the Patriarchate of Constantinople regarding the promotion of the OCU and the status of Hellenism.

We recall that the authoritative Greek edition “Romfea” reported that at its session on February 11 the Holy Kinot of Mt. Athos made statements in support of the Phanar on the “Ukrainian question” and called to prevent the humiliation of Hellenism: “We want to preserve peace and unity of the Church. However, as Athonites, we will not tolerate the humiliation of Hellenism and the Ecumenical Patriarchate.”

As the UOJ reported, the next session of the Holy Kinot of Mt. Athos is scheduled for February 14, after which the position of representatives of all the monasteries of Athos on topical issues can be announced.
