On 15 December 2022, the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada parliamentary Committee for Humanitarian and Information Policy, Mykyta Poturaev, said in a telethon that banning the UOC is inexpedient and will harm the image of Ukraine, reports the Telegram channel "Politika Strany".
"There is a widespread idea in society: 'Let's ban some Church. As a European country, especially as a country that wants to start negotiations for EU membership next year, we can't do that. This will mean that we will get a lawsuit in the European Court of Human Rights. We are guaranteed to lose this case, we will be disgraced as a state and as a society," Poturaev said during the telethon.
As reported, on 7 December, Poturaev spoke about the Rada's plans to pass two laws at once – on banning the Russian Orthodox Church and on simplifying the transfer to the OCU.
