On January 2, 2023, the rector of the Church of the Protection of the Holy Mary in Vinnytsia, Archpriest Antony Kovtoniuk, was attacked. Details of the crime became known to the UOJ.
When Fr. Antony was in the church preparing for a funeral service, an unknown person burst in and started smashing everything around him. He overturned a crucifix and tore down icons and other things. The rector came out of the sanctuary in response to the noise and tried to persuade the attacker to leave the church. However, the latter attacked the priest with a dangerous razor and slashed his throat. The policemen who arrived had to use their service weapons in the temple and shot the perpetrator in the leg.
Fr. Antony is in the intensive care department in a serious condition.
