On August 25, 2020, Metropolitan Luke of Zaporizhzhia and Melitopol met with Metropolitan Varsonofy of Vinnytsia and Bar. The meeting to study the activities of the outstanding surgeon Nikolai Pirogov related to the Church was held within the framework of cooperation between the two eparchies of the UOC, reports the press service of the Vinnytsia Eparchy.
The meeting was initiated by Metropolitan Luke, who specially came to Vinnytsia.
The participants in the meeting decided that it is necessary to create a commission to study the life and views of the surgeon and their compliance with the Orthodox faith. Apart from theologians, it will include historians and attract archival and museum institutions.
Nikolai Pirogov was born in 1810 in Moscow and died in 1881 in Vishnya village, Podolian Governorate (the territory of present-day Vinnytsia). This outstanding surgeon, anatomist, naturalist and teacher created the first atlas of topographic anatomy, laid the foundations of Russian military field surgery and founded the school of anesthesia.
As reported, earlier Metropolitan Luke called for considering the possibility of canonizing Pirogov.
